12 Hours of Snowbird

You snooze, you lose!

The first ever “12 Hours of Snowbird,” an endurance ski/snowboarding event, took place on February 18, 2011 at Snowbird and began at 7 pm. The race ended at 7 am the following morning. That's right, an all-nighter competition for the benefit of the Friends of the Utah Avalanche Center. The 75 entrants skied and rode in a full moon, beginning their pace setting lap from Hidden Peak to the bottom of Gadzoom. Gadzoom was then used utilized from 7 p.m. until midnight. Between that time and 1 p.m., participants headed over to the Alpine Room in the Snowbird Center for check in and flaik tag exchange, and after 1 a.m. Peruvian Express was the designated lift until the end of the race, on Saturday morning at 7 a.m.

When the powder settled and as a new day dawned on the exhausted and sleep-deprived participants, Matt Mullin was declared the winner with 125,643 vertical feet skied, followed by Ski Utah's boss, Nathan Rafferty at a very close 125,532 feet. The Utah record, Dirk Beal and JF Lanvers established in 2011 at 112,750 was shattered and next year's event is likely to deliver even more vertical!
